Because We Care
Despite the fear mongering, the bile spewing, the violence and vitriol coming from the top, or maybe because of these things, the level of caring we’re seeing at the community level is growing exponentially, and in truly creative and magnificent ways.

Dear friends,
Mea culpa! I know my last newsletter went on and on and on, but I just really wanted to share with y’all the power of writing to politicians. Bit by bit, if we all make a noise, we will grow so loud that they won’t be able to ignore us.
And what a noise we’re making! Over twelve million Americans stepped out to make a noise against fascism at the NO KINGS DAY protests, not to mention however many showed up at solidarity protests in Canada and across Europe. I’m not gonna lie – despite all the super scary stuff going on, I’m feeling quite optimistic most days. Despite the fear mongering, the bile spewing, the violence and vitriol coming from the top, or maybe because of these things, the level of caring we’re seeing at the community level is growing exponentially, and in truly creative and magnificent ways. And this is what makes me feel optimistic about a better world coming.

We care because…
We write letters because we care.
We make phone calls because we care.
We join protests because we care.
We organize protests because we care.
We wave signs because we care.
We hang statement banners because we care.
We bang pots because we care.

We sign petitions because we care.
We keep on going because we care.
We take risks because we care.
We help our neighbours because we care.
We feed each other because we care.

We banter with strangers because we care.
We donate to human rights organizations because we care.
We vote because we care.
We show up at town halls and meetings because we care.
We defend strangers because we care.
We celebrate Pride because we care

We grow a garden because we care.
We make art because we care.
We care for ourselves and each other because we care.
We express our joy because we care.
We grieve deeply because we care.
We share silly animal videos on social media because we care.

We don’t give up because we care.
We Canadians take action for our American friends because we care.

What We Care About…
We care about our neighbours.
We care about the children.
We care about our friends.
We care about our families.
We care about our freedoms,
We care about justice.
We care about hopefulness.
We care about beauty.
We care about connection.
We care about our planet.
We care about the multitude of species with whom we share the earth.
We care about the air we breathe and the water we drink.
We care about art.
We care about being able to afford what we need.
We care about people who are struggling.
We care about people we don’t even know.
We care about our health, physical and mental.
We care about other people’s health, physical and mental
We care about equality.
We care about peace.
We care about joy.
Better world is coming...
With all this caring going on, I feel truly optimistic that, together, we are taking steps towards creating a better world that serves all of us. I'm not saying it's going to be easy, but we seem to be on the right path to defeat those who would have us believe that fear and hatred are what runs the world. We know better. We're doing better. We are collectively working towards a better world.
With loving care,
Jessica
